Black-eyed peas and purple hull peas (second image) are eaten on New Year's Day to bring prosperity and abundance. This is especially prevalent in the Southern United States. However, many cultures share the association with beans and peas with prosperity and abundance, and in some northern states any beans will do. See also beans.
