Botanicals (Plants)
Each botanical entry includes the most common plant name, scientific binomial, and widely accepted magical or metaphysical associations. Linked keywords help you explore other ingredients that align with your intentions. These correspondences reflect commonly shared practices but should always be interpreted through the lens of your personal training, tradition, and intuition. We have only listed the medicinal properties supported by research rather than every traditional use. This resource is meant to inspire deeper study. Always consult qualified, trusted sources before using any herb medicinally.
Binomials are Essential
Scientific names (binomials) are essential in herbalism, as many plants share common names. For example, “Devil’s shoestring” can refer to more than a dozen species. Where there’s overlap, the listed binomial reflects the species most traditionally used in magic or the one best supported by medical research. Always ensure proper plant identification if you are growing or foraging your botanicals. Some herbs have toxic or deadly look-alikes.
Respect and Sourcing Note
Most green witches know that all plants are sacred, but it must be said that several plants in this grimoire hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous and traditional peoples. Always approach these sacred botanicals with respect, honor their origins, and source them ethically. Grow your own, purchase from sustainable or Indigenous growers, or consider respectful alternatives (noted in the entries) when possible. Mindful stewardship protects both the plants and the traditions that cherish them.
Crystals & Stones are Not Medicine!
While many botanicals have recognized medicinal properties, crystals, stones, and minerals are not medicinal. At Witch Academy, we deeply value their use in magic and energy work, where they are seen as powerful allies and gifts from the Earth. They can enhance rituals, support intention-setting, and offer energetic alignment in spiritual practice.
However, these benefits are magical and metaphysical, not medical. Their healing effects have not been scientifically proven, and it remains unknown whether any benefits come from the placebo effect, focused intention, or an unidentified energetic field. Crystals, stones, and minerals should never be a substitute for professional medical care. They are not medical tools and do not replace treatment from licensed healthcare providers.
Gem Elixirs
Do not ingest stones or crystals. Gem elixirs should only be made with non-toxic, tumbled stones such as clear quartz, amethyst, rose quartz, sapphire, or ruby, and only when you are certain the stone is safe to use and has no matrix or chips that could contaminate the solution. Stones should not be artificially dyed, and your elixir solution should be potable water (or potable Moon water). Many minerals are unsafe to use in water-based preparations. In particular, anglesite (contains lead), azurite (contains copper), crocoite (lead and chromium), dioptase (copper), malachite (copper), stolzite (lead and tungsten), and many more.
Witch Academy recommends preparing gem elixirs using indirect methods, where the water or solution surrounds the stones, crystals, or minerals without direct contact. This helps prevent contamination from toxic minerals, unstable surfaces, or dissolved particles, ensuring a safer and more effective practice. Gem elixir bottles look like this.
Tarot Card Information
Each tarot card’s keywords sections are based on widely accepted historical interpretations. These summaries were created by comparing similarities from various respected sources, including the writings of Arthur Edward Waite, Oswald Wirth, Aleister Crowley, Carl Jung, and various other dead white men and fraternal orders rooted in Western esoteric traditions. The similarities among these content sources were collated with the assistance of AI (ChatGPT). Witch Academy instructors then carefully reviewed and edited this output for clarity and accuracy. A considerable amount of original material was then incorporated into the grimoire pages for each card, making it 98% human-generated, with the remaining 2% a summary of previous classical tarot references by respected authors. The Witch Academy Instructor Notes section reflects original insights, interpretations, and teaching perspectives developed by our faculty and is not necessarily drawn from the historical texts used to source keywords.
